word of the week: COURSE
COURSE: A continuous and usually horizontal range of bricks, tiles, or shingles of the same size, as in a wall or on a roof forming a single row.
Notice how the courses of bricks on Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House differ from the more common type of brick courses on this Logan Square home (seen in thumbnail). For the Robie House, Wright chose to dye the mortar of the vertical joints to match the color of the bricks, and to leave the mortar running horizontally an off-white color. This helps to emphasize the horizontality of the building. It is far more typical to see bricks horizontally and vertically framed by a contrasting color of mortar as seen in this Logan Square home.
