word of the week: PILASTER

2010 May 9
by Caroline Nye Stevens

Union Station

PILASTER: An element projecting from a wall that is used to give the appearance of a supporting column with a base, shaft, and capital. Pilasters are typically non-structural and purely decorative.

Uptown Broadway Building

Notice how minimal the pilasters at Union Station (far left) appear when contrasted with the various flamboyant pilasters at the Uptown Broadway Building (4703-4715 N. Broadway).
