word of the week: FENESTRATION

2010 April 4
by Caroline Nye Stevens

Metropolitan Correctional Center

FENESTRATION: The design, proportioning, and arrangement of windows and other exterior openings of a building.

Marquette Building

Notice how different the fenestration is between the Metropolitan Correctional Center (far left) where the windows are irregularly placed and only 5″ wide to prevent escape, and the Marquette Building where the windows are evenly spaced and large to let in as much sunlight as possible.

Caroline! I’ve finally had a chance to browse around. What a great site! I love all the information and the photos are FABULOUS! Did you take them all?

Thanks for your kind words Paula! Yes, unless otherwise noted, the photos are all mine. It’s good to know that you’re reading — it will be added motivation to keep writing . . .

Did you know that “defenestrate” means ‘to throw out a window?’ Great blog, Caroline. Really enjoying it.
